It's a bird-it's a plane-no, it's the world's largest burger! July 10, 1988 marked the 25th anniversary of the city. With a legacy of doing things in a big way, the following two Guinness World Records were broken that day: the world's biggest hamburger and the world's biggest milkshake, prepared to order. A 26-foot grill was constructed in Mullins Park out of cinder blocks, half-inch-thick steel bars that were cut and welded together at 8-inch intervals, and heavy mesh. Special flamethrowers lit 8,500 pounds of Royal Oak charcoal at 4 p.m. Costing $3,500, 5,063 pounds of ground beef was pressed onto a pan with gloved hands under a mesh teepee to keep away the flies. It was then swung over the fire by a crane to grill in the presence of a Broward County public health official. Flipping the burger at 5:27p.m. required the assistance of Coral Springs Fire Department's Jack Reisenger and other firefighters, who turned it one piece at a time onto smaller grills. Twelve-thousand people stood in line for their serving. This event was B.Y.O.B (bring your own buns). Also going into the record book that day was a 310-gallon chocolate milkshake. Thanks to McArthur Dairy, it was made the old-fashioned way with 100 gallons of milk, 174 gallons of vanilla ice cream, and Hershey's chocolate syrup in a 300-gallon stainless steel vat. |
